
Susan Buckley, a registered dietitian and nutrition educator, works daily with clients seeking to change their eating habits and eating ways. She integrates heart healthy nutrition and weight loss. Susan coaches based partly from personal experience. More than 15 years ago, she found herself 70 pounds overweight. Step-by-step, she shed those pounds in a year and she has kept off the weight.
With her patients, Susan works on two levels. The first is the rational side of moving to healthier eating. It is about education, making sure people understand what they should eat and what they should not eat. She helps them think about how to eat better and how many calories can be eaten to achieve a target weight over a reasonable length of time.
On another level, Susan works with her patients to understand why they eat. In many cases, patients find that the unhealthy calories consumed have nothing to do with being hungry. Rather, eating is used to cope with stress, anxiety and sadness as well as boredom. Discovering what drives their eating helps her patients move toward making healthier choices.
